Since the city incorporated in 2003, Rancho Cordova has experienced noteworthy accomplishments that have made our community a place to live, work, learn and play. In addition, the city has received awards recognizing excellence in many disciplines through the years. Following are highlights of the city’s accomplishments and recent awards.
Accomplishments
Each year, the Rancho Cordova mayor presents an annual State of the City address to highlight what our community has accomplished during the past year and announce projects and programs that are coming soon.
2022 Highlights
- Rancho Cordova is a great place to live.
- Home building is stronger than ever despite the pandemic, development is strong in Rancho Cordova, and special projects are on their way, including the Rancho Cordova Retirement Residence and Anatolia Marketplace. Rancho Cordova also welcomed its newest grocery story, Sprouts! Learn more about new projects.
- The city is always improving infrastructure and building new infrastructure to support our residents and businesses. Learn more about new projects.
- The city announced a 61% decrease in crime when we looked at data dating from the beginning of cityhood to 2019. Learn more about our safe community.
- Rancho Cordova is a great place to work with over 3,500 businesses that employee 65,000+ people. There are many new places to work, industrial and warehouse space is in high demand, and $4 million has been allocated for business recovery. Learn more about new businesses and projects.
- Rancho Cordova is a great place to learn. This year, the city celebrated the Grand Opening of the Rancho Cordova Youth Center and next year, the city will launch a new Workforce Development Program, and the Rancho Cordova Promise Program offers a fee-free opportunity for a college education. The Mills Station Arts and Culture Center is our home for the arts, and Soil Born Farms is a unique and amazing place. Learn more about education.
- Rancho Cordova is a great place to play. A new Cordova Girls Softball Complex is now open, we are growing entertainment, and events are back!
Recent Awards
In December 2022, Rancho Cordova was ranked #12 in “Top Boomtowns in America” by SmartAsset. In the study, the economic growth of each city was measured by population, income, businesses, housing and more. Learn more and see the full list.
On November 16, 2022, the city received a Clean Air award from the Sacramento Smoke and Tobacco Free Coalition. The award recognized the city for the adoption and implementation of a comprehensive flavored tobacco ordinance. The ordinance, passed in June, prohibits the sale, offer of sale, or distribution of all flavored tobacco products, which often end up in the hands of youth.
Also in November 2022, the city's Communications Team received three awards from the California Capital Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). The team received awards in three categories, including Internal Communications Campaigns, Social Media Campaigns and Crisis Communication & Issues Management.
The city received a 2022 Government Experience Award for the redesign of its website, CityofRanchoCordova.org. The city was also named a 2022 Tyler Technologies Public Sector Excellence Award Winner for its innovative and impactful work in launching Rancho Cordova Online, a one-stop system to apply for, renew and pay for licenses, submit permits and plans, and apply for meeting or event space online.
The city's Public Works Department was awarded four Project of the Year Awards from the American Public Works Association. The award-winning projects were the Zinfandel Complex Project, Rod Beaudry-Routier Bikeway Project, Sunrise Boulevard Rehabilitation Project, and Folsom Boulevard Beautification and Enhancement Project.
The city’s Finance Department was awarded a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada in fall 2021. The certificate was awarded to the city for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the fiscal year that ended in June 2020.
The city was one of 51 communities throughout the country that was recognized by the League of American Bicyclists with a Bicycle Friendly Community award in fall 2020. The city earned the bronze-level designation for building a bicycle friendly community, where people of all ages and abilities have access to safe street networks.
The city was named a 2019 All-America City, a prestigious award given by the National Civic League. The theme for the 2019 All-America City award was creating healthy communities, and Rancho Cordova earned the award for three special programs:
- Soil Born Farms
- Mather Veterans Village
- Mentees at Cordova High
This is the second time Rancho Cordova has received this honor, having been recognized as a 2010 All-America City.
