The City of Rancho Cordova stands for justice, and we are united in our opposition to violence and racism.

The horrific death of George Floyd was a tipping point in our nation’s history, and the protests we saw raging across the United States, of people fighting for justice, calling for an end to racism, can no longer go unheard. Racism has no place in our country and no place in the City of Rancho Cordova.

Here in Rancho Cordova, people exercised their right to peacefully protest the tragic death of George Floyd and others. The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects freedom of speech and freedom of assembly, among other rights. In this country and in our city, people have every right to gather in protest, and we celebrate that right and will protect it. We stood with them for justice and an end to racism, and we will continue to stand with them.

We pledge that we will continue to listen, to make positive changes, and to evolve until our Black community, which has been rocked by so many unacceptable incidents, no longer feels the need to remind us that Black lives matter. Because the fact is that Black lives matter greatly to us.

The incident between Rancho Cordova Police Department Officer Brian Fowell and Elijah Tofuno was disturbing and unacceptable, and we want to ensure that anomalies like this never happen again in our city.

The incident took place on April 27, 2020, and Officer Fowell, an employee of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, was assigned to the Rancho Cordova Police Department at that time. When this incident occurred, the City Manager reached out to the Sheriff and requested that the officer immediately be removed from the Rancho Cordova Police Department, and he was.

This incident is not representative of our RCPD officers, who work tirelessly on behalf of our community. For the current status of this officer, please contact the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, his employer.

The City of Rancho Cordova is developing a Climate Action Plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions generated in our city. The Climate Action Plan will set goals to reduce emissions and outline policies and actions to achieve these goals. The Climate Action Plan will also assess vulnerabilities to climate change impacts, as well as identify strategies to adapt to these impacts.

The City of Rancho Cordova contracts with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office (SSO) for its police service, so the Rancho Cordova Police Department follows the SSO’s Use of Force policy. The policy, which was recently updated in November 2020, is available for review on both the city and RCPD website.
