Report Issues
To report flooding, clogged storm drains, fallen trees in the roadway, traffic signal outages, or other non-life-threatening emergencies during a storm, call 916.851.8710. Service is available during regular business hours and after-hours.
For life-threatening emergencies, call 911.
Tips to Prepare and Respond
Follow these tips to be storm ready:
- Prepare an emergency supply kit, evacuation plan and a family communication plan. You and your loved ones may not be together during an emergency, so think about how you will communicate and where you will meet following an evacuation. Periodically review your plan.
- Check storm drains near your property. Leaves can clog storm drains and lead to localized flooding. Sweep away leaves that are in your gutter or on top of a storm drain before rainfall. If you notice a storm drain that is full to the brim with debris, call the city at 916.851.8710 to have it cleaned. If your property is prone to flooding, have sandbags, plastic sheeting and other flood-fighting materials on-hand.
- If you have tree branches or other storm debris, we remind residents that the bulky item pickup program from Republic Services is an option for removal of large amounts of storm debris, and it is offered at no additional cost to residential solid waste customers. Residents can schedule up to three appointments per year for the collection of up to 10 cubic yards of material per appointment. Contact Republic Services at 916.638.9000.
- Learn how to turn off water, gas and electricity connections to your home in the event that your home is flooded. Contact your local utility companies if you need help.
- Consider flood insurance. Most homeowners’ insurance policies do not cover flood damage. Ask your insurance agent about obtaining flood insurance from the National Flood Insurance Program. Typically, a 30-day wait period is required before a flood insurance policy takes effect. Contact your insurance provider for more information.
- Look up your address on MyHazards to discover hazards in your area and learn steps to reduce personal risk.
- Share flood preparedness information with neighbors, students, family and friends.
During a storm:
- Keep pets indoors, and minimize travel during periods of high winds and heavy rain. Remember that if you come across traffic signal lights that have gone out, remember that intersection becomes a four-way stop.
- Do not try to escape rising floodwater by going into the attic unless you have roof access or unless it’s your only option.
- To report flooding, clogged storm drains, fallen trees in the roadway, traffic signal outages, or other non-life-threatening emergencies during a storm, call 916.851.8710. Service is available during regular business hours and after-hours. For life-threatening emergencies, call 911.
Power Outages
If your power goes out, follow these tips from SMUD:
- Check to see if the lights are out in neighboring homes. If they are, you're most likely part of a larger power outage.
- To view current outages and restoration times, or to report an outage, call SMUD's 24-hour outage line at 1.888.456.SMUD (7683), or visit their Outage Map. For the latest updates, you can also follow SMUD on Twitter.
- While you’re waiting for electricity to be restored, turn off all electric appliances and switches, except the porch light or any other light that SMUD crews can see from the street when the power is back on. Having only one light on lowers the initial demand for electricity and makes it easier for SMUD crews to restore service.
- If you see downed power lines or hear crackling wires—stay away! Report downed power lines by calling 911 first and then SMUD at 1.888.456.SMUD (7683). Keep others away, and avoid contact with anything that may be touching fallen wires.
If you have PG&E for electric service, you can contact PG&E’s 24-Hour Call Center Line at 800.743.5000.
Lost Pets
Keep pets indoors during periods of high winds and heavy rain. If you lose a pet, check with your neighbors and local shelters. You can also report the missing pet to Animal Services at 916.851.8852.
