Celebrating Diversity Native American Heritage Month

Did you know that the first inhabitants of present-day Rancho Cordova were the Nisenan Indians? The Nisenan lived off the land, catching fish from the American River, and gathering and grinding acorns into meal. There were 11 Nisenan communities along the six mile stretch of the American River that is now known as Rancho Cordova.

Join us in honoring and celebrating Native American Heritage Month throughout November by attending an event, or learning more about the histories, rich cultures and traditions of Native Americans.

At Folsom Lake College (FLC)

In November, FLC observes American Indian & Alaska Native Heritage Month, a time to honor the sovereignty, traditions, languages, resilience, and land stewardship practices of American Indian Tribal Nations. Learn more about support and resource available through FLC's Native American Student Support & Success Program (NASSSP).

Throughout the month, FLC is also hosting a series of events including film screenings, artist talks and more. Click here to view the full calendar.

Visit the State Indian Museum

Located at 2618 K Street in Midtown Sacramento, adjacent to John Sutter’s Fort, the State Indian Museum tells the story of California’s first inhabitants– beginning here before the Spanish, explorers, and settlers arrived, and eons before the advent of the Gold Rush. Stop in to see and hear about the people who shared and maintained the natural environment for centuries, and learn about their understanding and use of California’s natural resources. View some of the most amazing Indian cultural items of the 19th century and learn about the people today—where they live, and how they make California their home in the 21st century.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for youth, and kids 5 and under are free.
