Roundabout Feasibility Study

The City of Rancho Cordova is studying the feasibility of building roundabouts at new and existing intersections in our community. The study will:

  • Evaluate and prioritize possible locations for roundabouts
  • Include an implementation plan with conceptual designs
  • Develop guidelines for building roundabouts in the City of Rancho Cordova

Recent Project History

The city has held three community meetings to provide a project update to residents and gather feedback. Access the meeting materials below.

The Benefits of Roundabouts

Roundabouts are a designated Proven Safety Countermeasure by the Federal Highway Administration and are proven to improve traffic flow, result in less car crashes and more:

  • Fewer and less-severe crashes: There are significantly fewer car crashes at roundabouts compared to typical intersections. Also, since all vehicles are traveling in the same direction at a lower speed in a roundabout, crashes are generally less severe.
  • Less traffic congestion. When entering a roundabout, cars do not stop unless necessary, eliminating traffic congestion.
  • Placemaking and gateway effect. Roundabouts can provide a physical connection to the community with the use of art and landscaping.
  • Lower maintenance costs compared to traffic signals. Traffic signals require electricity 24-hours a day, maintenance for burned-out lights and more.
